This article by Kim, Polan & Sanchez-Burkes in the NYTimes discusses how metaphors and physical body positioning affect our ability to be creative. It turns out that sitting next to a box (i.e., ‘outside the box’) fosters greater creativity than sitting inside it (who knew?) and people who are holding a warm cup of coffee are more likely to consider their conversational partner a ‘warm’ person. So, what does this mean for you? That you can change your results by changing your body position, gestures, environment. Cool, right? Coaches have been telling their clients some version of this for years, it’s great to see it validated.
